This was the only cooperative project to be recognized in the State of North Dakota.  On April 27, 1989, The Falkirk Mining Company was selected by the Secretary of Interior as the National Semifinalist for Wetland Reclamation; Award ceremonies were held on July 24, 1989, on the south lawn of the White House

DESCRIPTION OF CERTAIN AWARDS

United States Office of Surface Mining (OSM)
Excellence in Surface Coal Mining and Reclamation Awards 

National Awards – Awards presented to coal mining companies for achieving the most exemplary mining and reclamation in the country, recognizing top quality on-the-ground achievement of the surface mining law goals. 

Director’s Award – A special award presented to one coal mining company from the OSM Director for outstanding achievement in a specific area of reclamation. 

Best of the Best Award – One operation selected from the year’s National Award winners, recognized as the best example of surface mined reclamation in that year. 

Hall of Fame Award – A 20th anniversary award (one-time award) presented to one or more mining operations who had won a National Award in previous years and whose reclamation has withstood the test of time. 

25th Anniversary Awards - A 25th anniversary award presented to one or more mining operations who had won a National Award in previous years as the most outstanding examples of coal mining reclamation since the Surface Mining Law was enacted in 1977.  The special award winners selected from all of the past awards were presented with bronze, silver and gold awards.
